The Donkey
G.K.Chesterton
When fishes flew and forests walked
And figs grew upon thorn,
Some moment when the moon was blood
Then surely I was born.
With monstrous head and sickening cry
And ears like errant wings,
The devil’s walking parody
On all four-footed things.
The tattered outlaw of the earth,
Of ancient crooked will;
Starve, scourge, deride me: I am dumb,
I keep my secret still.
Fools! For I also had my hour;
One far fierce hour and sweet:
There was a shout about my ears,
And palms before my feet.
L’Asino
G.K.Chesterton
Quando i pesci volavano e le foreste camminavano
e i fichi crescevano sul rovo,
in un istante in cui la luna era sangue
fu allora, di certo, che io nacqui.
Con testa mostruosa e verso nauseante
e orecchie come ali erranti,
la parodia ambulante del diavolo
d’ogni cosa a quattro zampe.
Fuorilegge cencioso della terra,
d’antica volontà storta;
affamatemi, frustatemi, deridetemi: sto muto,
custodisco ancora il mio segreto.
Stolti! Anch’io ebbi la mia ora;
un’ora lontana, fiera e dolce:
vi fu un grido intorno alle mie orecchie,
e palme davanti ai miei piedi.
