Elegy in a Country Churchyard
The men that worked for England
They have their graves at home:
And bees and birds of England
About the cross can roam.
But they that fought for England,
Following a falling star,
Alas, alas for England
They have their graves afar.
And they that rule in England,
In stately conclave met,
Alas, alas for England,
They have no graves as yet.
- G.K. Chesterton
Elegia in un Cimitero di Campagna
Gli uomini che lavorarono per l’Inghilterra
hanno le loro tombe a casa:
e api e uccelli d’Inghilterra
intorno alla croce possono vagare.
Ma quelli che combatterono per l’Inghilterra,
seguendo una stella cadente,
ahimè, ahimè per l’Inghilterra
hanno le loro tombe lontano.
E quelli che governano l’Inghilterra,
riuniti in solenne conclave,
ahimè, ahimè per l’Inghilterra,
non hanno ancora tombe.
