Little Door
Here is the little door
Here is the little door, lift up the latch, oh lift!
We need not wander more but enter with our gift;
Our gift of finest gold,
Gold that was never bought nor sold;
Myrrh to be strewn about his bed;
Incense in clouds about his head;
All for the Child who stirs not in his sleep.
But holy slumber holds with ass and sheep.
Bend low about his bed, for each he has a gift;
See how his eyes awake, lift up your hands, O lift!
For gold, he gives a keen-edged sword
(Defend with it Thy little Lord!),
For incense, smoke of battle red.
Myrrh for the honoured happy dead;
Gifts for his children terrible and sweet,
Touched by such tiny hands and
Oh such tiny feet.

La piccola porta
Ecco la piccola porta
Ecco la piccola porta, solleva il chiavistello, oh solleva!
Non dobbiamo più errare, ma entrare col nostro dono;
il nostro dono d’oro finissimo,
oro che mai fu comprato né venduto;
mirra da spargere intorno al suo giaciglio;
incenso a nuvole intorno al suo capo;
tutto per il Bambino che non si desta nel suo sonno,
ma un sacro sopore lo tiene con l’asino e la pecora.
Chinàti intorno al suo giaciglio, ché per ciascuno ha un dono;
guarda come i suoi occhi si destano, levate le mani, oh levate!
Per l’oro, egli dona una spada affilata
(difendi con essa il tuo piccolo Signore!),
per l’incenso, il fumo rosso della battaglia.
Mirra per gli onorati, felici morti;
doni per i suoi figli, terribili e dolci,
toccati da mani così minute e
oh da così minuti piedi.
