Abstract
A satirical novel of Edwardian politics and high finance, part of Belloc’s Burden sequence. A Cabinet minister’s fortunes and those of the hapless, well-connected George Mulross Demaine are jolted when a speculative imperial company (the Van Diemens) and a distant American mining scandal collide with the closed world of governing families. Belloc mocks parliamentary careerism, financial jobbery, and the incestuous kinship of the ruling class.
