Abstract
A satirical mock-biography (frontispiece by G. K. Chesterton) of Emmanuel Burden, an honest, pious Thames Street ironmonger drawn into and destroyed by the fraudulent M’Korio Delta Development Company and its ring of imperial financiers. Belloc uses a sanctimonious hagiographic narrator to skewer the cant of Empire, speculative company promotion, and the financier Barnett/Lord Lambeth. The book carries antisemitic content in its portrait of the financial villains.
