Abstract
A satirical novel of Edwardian high politics and finance, sequel to Mr Clutterbuck’s Election, set in a near-future 1925. Prime Minister ‘Dolly’ and Opposition leader ‘Pongo’ Pennybunt scheme over an Indian loan while dependent on the financier Duke of Battersea (an antisemitic caricature of a Jewish plutocrat, born plain Mr Barnett). Belloc lampoons the party system, plutocracy and the corruption of public life.
