Abstract
A collection of early Doyle short stories exploring the supernatural and the uncanny, opening with ‘The Brown Hand,’ in which a dead Indian patient’s ghost returns nightly seeking his amputated hand, and ‘The Usher of Lea House School,’ a tale of blackmail and menace beneath a schoolmaster’s genteel surface. The other tales range across mesmerism, doubles, and unexplained hauntings at the borderland of the visible world.
