Abstract
A miscellany opening with adventure tales — including a young officer outwitted and then forgiven by his own disguised general in the Sudan, and a recluse’s uneasy encounter with a mysterious woman on the Yorkshire moors — followed by a separate suite of medical-life stories drawn from Doyle’s own experience as a doctor. Together the tales range from imperial derring-do and Gothic unease to the everyday drama of the surgery.
