Abstract
A party of European and American tourists cruising the Nile toward the Dervish frontier in 1895 is ambushed and force-marched into the desert by a Dervish raiding band. Their ordeal of captivity and threatened forced conversion becomes, in Doyle’s telling, both an adventure narrative and a pointed defense of British imperial policy in Egypt and the Sudan.
