Abstract
A Professor Challenger short story in which the irascible scientist, funded by a vast bequest, drills an eight-mile shaft to the earth’s crust to prove his theory that the planet is a living organism, and enlists an Artesian engineer to drive a drill into its sensitive inner tissue so the earth may ‘scream’ and prove his point.
