Abstract
Belloc’s polemical thesis that European civilization is identical with the Catholic Church (‘The Faith is Europe and Europe is the Faith’). He rereads the Roman Empire, the Dark and Middle Ages, and the Reformation from a ‘Catholic conscience of history’, arguing that Rome did not fall but was transformed by the Church, and that the Reformation was a near-fatal shipwreck of European unity.
