Abstract
A mysterious, fabulously wealthy stranger, Raffles Haw, builds a palatial house near the village of Tamfield and befriends the impoverished artist Robert McIntyre and his sister Laura. Haw’s fortune, secretly derived from a chemical process for transmuting base metal into gold, brings ruin as much as good, corrupting those around him and exposing the moral hazards of unearned wealth.
