Abstract
A comic farce novel in which the timid Professor Higginson, tempted by the Devil, steals a magnificent green overcoat on a rainy night and is promptly swept into a bungled kidnapping. The stolen garment drives an escalating chain of Edwardian mischance and deception across a provincial manufacturing town.
