Abstract
A deliberate pastiche of the early-Victorian sentimental romance, telling of Belinda Montgomery, heiress of The Towers, and her love for the impoverished neighbour Horatio Maltravers, thwarted when her father presses a wealthier suitor. Belloc mimics the archaic diction, moral tableaux and mannered pathos of the genre with affectionate irony.
