Abstract
Scottish border farmer Jock Calder of West Inch narrates his youth during the Napoleonic Wars, his rivalry with his strong friend Jim Horscroft for the love of his flirtatious cousin Edie, and his eventual service against Napoleon’s invasion threat, culminating at Waterloo. The novel blends border-country domestic life with the looming national fear of Bonaparte, ‘the great shadow’ over Europe.
