Abstract
A set of critical essays with facing verse translations on six poets of the French Renaissance and its threshold — Charles of Orleans, Villon, Marot, Ronsard, Du Bellay and Malherbe. Belloc argues that England has culpably ignored the literature of its nearest European rival, and offers these studies as a labour of Anglo-French cultural reconciliation rooted in a shared Christendom. Part appreciation, part manifesto for European unity in letters.
